How to detail a car. Clay
By Feroze Kistan of Angelart
In 1990, Tadao Kadate of Japan invented clay resin and for many years clay was a well kept secret amongst vehicle detailer's. It is the safe way to clean your paint without the risk of damaging the finish. Clay is made of Polybutene and a very mild abrasive. Clay removes bonded contamination that like rail dust, pollution, bugs, paint over-spray, brake dust, water spots tar etc, that normal washing will not. Clay will not remove scratches or swirls as it pulls the contamination out of the clear coat not unlike the way a beautician pulls out hair out with wax. What you'll need. 1)Clay. Brand doesn't matter, due to patents clay is manufactured by one or two factories and re-packaged for other car detail companies. Do not use pro-grade clay, you will remove the clear coat if you don't use it properly. 2) Detail spray. (It usually comes in a kit with the clay) 3) Microfibre Cloth 4) A six pack of your fav refreshment, this is hard work.... Avoid the Sun Besides the risk of sun stroke the sun keeps the body to hot, the clay melts and the detailing spray evaporates too quickly. Method After washing and drying the car, test the paint surface by putting your hand in a thin sandwhich bag and gently run your hand over the surface, the roughness you feel is the contamination. Prepare the clay by breaking off a piece of about 50g (one third of the 150g bar) and knead the clay until soft, much like window putty. Flatten into a pancake about 3-4mm thick. Spray a 10cm2 area with detailing spray and lightly buff the surface with the clay, it does not matter if you go in circles or lines. Check the clay often, when dirty fold in half and flatten so you always have a clean surface to work with. Keep the area well lubricated, you want to be gliding the clay effortlessly, not scrubbing it. Start with the least dirtiest parts, the roof, bonnet, upper sides, booth, lower sides, glass, rims and exhaust. If you drop the clay, trash it and use a new piece. A 50g piece is enough to do a medium size sedan or boat. Once you've used a piece of clay throw it away or use it to clean your taps or house windows. Finishing Wash the car again to remove any residue, clay will remove the wax and any sealants so you would need to re-wax or glaze when done. You should be opening that last can now :) When do you need to clay If its a new car and it was delivered by rail, and then once every 6-9 months. I do it more often as I stay 800m from a railway line, but I use a mild clay. When you need to remove bug and tar.
