The Mark of a Good Logo
By Feroze Kistan of Angelart
The Mark of a Good Logo The principles of a good logo is it should be simple, unique, functional and timeless and suitable. Simple: You should be able to describe your logo in a sentence or two. And I don’t mean what the symbols represent but for example if I had to say to you “ golden M”, what comes to mind. Often trying too hard to add as many elements to a logo as possible to represent all the services or products you have is more detrimental than what little benefits there are. If you are in the process of having a logo developed take the proof you’ve been given and delete all elements that seem “too much” or is adding no value, what you have left is the logo. Unique: Spend time with a good designer that is willing to do the research to ensure your logo is as individual as you are. Avoid crowd sourcing or quick turn-around services as they often employ clip art or template logo’s. This will also avoid trademark issues later. Using clipart for a logo not only dilutes the value of the brand if other business in your area are using the same icon, you also run the risk of absorbing any bad reputations they might have. Functional: Always view your new logo in black and white. If a logo requires colour in order to effective then there’s something wrong with it. A logo should be recognizable from an inch up to a billboard size. Bear in mind current and future uses, you might only need it for your business card now, but what if in the future you need to print it t-shirts or your delivery vehicles? Timeless: Will your logo stand the test of time? Never design a logo according to current trends, you’ll date the logo for a certain period and once the trend has run its course you are left with “old school” logo. Coco-cola has used an almost similar brand mark since 1915 and look how well its’ done for them. Most business owners looking at getting a new logo for their business overlook the fact that the logo only stands as a reminder for customers of who you, the value of the logo is the quality the service or product that stands behind the logo.
I run a Graphic, Website and Photographic Studio in Johannesburg, South Africa since 1994.
